Many dishes are prepared or served for a special occasion or historic event. Especially children enjoy these special meals or snacks. It is also a good occasion to talk about cultural and historical aspects of life in general and food in particular, whilst enjoying the delicious dishes.
1 September	Recipes from Uzbekistan	Independence day in Uzbekistan. In 1991 the Uzbeks managed to struggle free from Soviet Russia. 20 years later, people complained to have no cheap bread and public transport.	12 September	Russian recipes	On 12 September 1959, the Russians lanced the Lunik II towards the moon. Unlike the Lunik I, which had been lanced with the same mission, this one actually reached the surface of the moon.	22 September	Recipe from Bulgaria	Independence Day in Bulgaria. The country became independent from the Ottomans in 1878. The Ottomans had conquered the country in 1393 after a defeat of a Crusade battle.
2 September	Vietnamese recipes	Vietnam became independent of Japan and France on 2 September 1945 after a heavy famine. In the 19th century, when the emperor lived in the former capital Hue, there was a tradition of almost too rich food.	13 September	British recipes	13 September is teh birthday of the British writer Roald Dahl (13/9/1916-23/11/1990). One of his most famous books is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.	23 September	Recipes from Saudi Arabia	Al-Yaom Al-Watany is celebrated in Saudi Arabia, or Unification Day of the Kingdom. On 22 September 1932, Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud unified the tribes of the Arabian peninsula into one state with one religion.
3 September	Spanish recipes	The Spaniards like parties and dancing and it is therefore not surprising, that they have a holiday for each region. Today is the Día de Navarra.	14 September	British recipes	On 3 September 1752, the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar. As they skipped immediately 11 days, it was suddenly the 14th of September.	24 September	Recipes from South Africa	24 September used to be the day for Zulu King Shaka. Nowadays, South Africa celebrates cultural heritage. The day is also called "National Braai" Day.
4 September	Argentinean recipes	The Argentineans celebrate "Immigrants Day" and they have : Spaniards in the 16th century, Italians in the 17th, Germans (20th century), African slaves and economic migrants.	15 September	Recipe from Costa Rica	On 15 September 1821, Costa Rica, with some other Central American countries, signed a declaration of independence from Spain. Now one dances salsa and meringue.	24 September	Dominican recipes	Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is the patron of firefighters as well as the patron saint of the Dominican Republic. On Dia de las Mercedes, a pilgrimage is made to the shrine of Saint Cerro.
5 September	Recipes from Gujarat	Freddie Mercury was born on 5 September 1946. His own name was Farrokh Bulsara, he was born on Zanzibar but he was an Indian Parsi by origin. He died 24 November 1991.	16 September	Mexican recipes	Today is Independence Day in Mexico. On 16 September 1810, the war with Spain began. It had started as a peasants’ rebellion and resulted only on 6 November 1813 in independence.	25 September	Norwegian recipes	In a referendum on 25 September 1972, Norway rejected European Community membership. They still are not a member, and only time will tell if they were right or not.
6 September	Recipes from Pakistan	Today is Army Day or Defense day in Pakistan; also Navy Day and Airforce Day are part of the September month. Parades, exhibitions and visits to war memorials are carried out.	17 September	Recipe from Angola	26 September is National Heroes' Day in Angola, because Agostinho Neto was born on that date in 1922. He was the leader of the popular movement for liberation in two wars.	26 September	European recipes	26 September is the European Day of Languages, proclaimed on 6 December 2001. With this day, one wants to encourage learning lanuages and raise awareness on all existing languages.
7 September	Recipe from Mozambique	Victory Day in Mozambique. The agreement with Portugal was signed in 1974, the real independence started only in 1975. Portuguese is still the official language.	18 September	German recipes	Today marks the start of the Oktoberfest, a yearly 16-day festival originating from Munich, Bavaria. Millions of people enjoy the festival and the traditional German food.	27 September	Belgian recipes	27 September is the French community holiday in Belgium. Being internally divided offers scope for holidays: the 11th of July for the Dutch speakers and the 21st of July for all.
8 September	Lebanese recipes	During the holiday of the Nativity of our Lady, the birth of Virgin Mary is celebrated in Lebanon. In this country, Muslims make up about 60% and Christians 39%.	19 September	Recipes from Chile	19 September, one day after Independence Day, Chile celebrates "Día de las Glorias del Ejército" or Armed Forces Day. Parades are held by army, navy and airforce.	28 September	Scottish recipes	On 28 September 1928, a bacteria killing mould was found by Sir Alexander Fleming (a Scottish biologist and pharmacologist) that would be known and used as penicillin.
9 September	Recipes from Campania	"Salerno Day": on 9 September 1945 the operation of the landing of the Allied Forces took place in Salerno (Campania), after the invasion of Sicily.	20 September	Thai recipes	20 September in Thailand is National Youth Day. This day is not only in honour of the youth, but also two birth dates of kings, Chulalongkorn and Ananda Mahidol.	28 September	Czech recipes	On 28 September 935, St Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia and current patron of Czechia, was murdered. Now this is celebrated as Czech Statehood Day.
10 September	French recipes	On 10 September 1977, the last person is beheaded by guillotine in France. In 1981, the French would totally abolish capital punishment. The first execution by guillotine had been in 1902.	20 September	Recipes from Lazio	On 20 September 1870, Rome was captured during the reign of pope Pius IX. As the city was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy, this was the last step towards the unification of the country.	29 September	Recipes with coffee	29 September is International Coffee Day, for the joys of this beverage as well as to promote fair trade coffee. You can drink coffee, use it in cocktails or prepare desserts with it.
11 September	Egyptian recipes	On 11 September, the Coptic New Year is celebrated. The Coptic Calendar has 12 months of 30 days and a thirteenth month of 5 days. The Copts are 7 years behind compared to the Gregorians.	21 September	Recipes from Ghana	Today Founder's Day is celebrated in Ghana. 21 September 1909 was the day of birth of Dr Kwame Nkrumah the architect behind Ghana's independence and an advocate for Pan-Africanism.	30 September	Mexican recipes	30 September in Mexico is “Morelo’s birthday” since Father José María Morelos y Pavón, one of the founding fathers who led the Independence War against Spain, was born on that date in 1765.
