Brown betty

  • 4 APPLES, sliced
  • 1/2 TSP CINNAMON POWDER
  • 4 SLICES OF BREAD, cubed
  • 50 GRAM BUTTER, cubed
  • 1 CUP BROWN SUGAR
  • GRATED PEEL OF 1 ORANGE
  • 1 TBSP LEMON JUICE
  
  • 3 LITER BUTTERMILK
  • 8 TBSP BROWN SUGAR

Mix the bread with the butter, 1/2 cup of brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix the remaining sugar with 1/4 cup of hot water, orange peel and lemon juice to a syrup. Put half of the apples on the bottom of a greased oven dish. Pour half of the syrup on top and distribute half of the bread mixture over the apples. Repeat the process. Bake the betty 20 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.

This was a popular dessert in colonial times.

Put a sieve in a pan and put a clean dish cloth in the sieve. Pour the buttermilk in the sieve and let it stand for 24 hours. Put the hangop in the fridge for 2 hours before serving. Add two tablespoons of sugar to each serving.
