The
temple in Rajshahi is beautiful, especially from the other side of the water. inside,
there are still many statues. Unfortunately, some of the Hindu goddesses
are half naked, and their bare breasts fail to impress the (mainly Muslim
oriented) current population of
Bangladesh. Even worse, they were so annoyed with them, that
some of the statues are destroyed and others de-breasted. As usual, I am
the only tourist. Some local guys sit on the stairs. When I arrive, they
jump up and want to have a picture of them and me:
"Hey! We are your friend!"
Sure, for a very limited time. I run off, worried that, in case I am not
suitably dressed, they may de-breast me.
The rural area around Rajshahi is beautiful; the rural area is the biggest
attraction of Bangladesh anyway, in my view. Most of the work is still
done by hand; you see carts and ploughs pulled by oxen, and
rickshaws
heavily loaded with big piles of hay. Looking at the muscled legs of the
rickshaw-wallahs, I guess they might make a reasonable chance in the tour
de France! The roads are small and mainly made of clay. You hardly see any
cars, the only motorized vehicles drive inside the city or on the
"highway" and even than, 90% are buses and trucks. |
